One of the Most Notorious Coins Ever Minted...
Famous 1908 No Motto Saint-Gaudens

The story of the notorious gold coins with the missing motto "In God We Trust" began in 1907 when President Teddy Roosevelt commissioned Augustus Saint-Gaudens to create a new series of U.S. gold coins.

The Missing Motto - In the new $20 gold coin design released in 1907, the motto "In God We Trust" was removed from the design. It seems the President had strong feelings it was blasphemous to use the Lord’s name on coins that were so often used to buy "worldly" goods and services.

When the $20 Saint-Gaudens were released, the motto "In God We Trust" had disappeared. In early 1908, the tabloid newspapers picked up the story. Overnight, there was a huge public outcry by Christians and Jews alike demanding that "In God We Trust" re-appear on all United States coins.

New Design and Return of an Old Motto - Congress passed a law requiring the motto, "In God We Trust" be returned to all United States coinage at once. In the middle of 1908, the United States Mint halted the production of "No Motto" Saint-Gaudens. The coin’s reverse design was changed and "In God We Trust" was added just below the flying eagle. You can see both designs on the coins above.
