The Austrian Mint first issued their musically themed Philharmonics in gold in 1989 and they were quickly recognized for excellent craftsmanship. In 2008, they expanding the popular coins into silver and eventually added platinum Philharmonics to the line-up.

One side of the Austrian Philharmonic features the Great Pipe Organ of Vienna's Golden Concert Hall, home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The other side features musical instruments of the famous orchestra which inspired the design.
