“Confederate States of America”
Silver Coins from the S.S. Republic
Austin Rare Coins is proud to announce the release of the newly identified 1861-O “Confederate States of America” Silver Half Dollar coins from the S.S. Republic Shipwreck! These large “Shipwreck Effect” silver coins lay on the bottom of the sea for 138 years after surviving the shipwreck of the S.S. Republic steamship in 1865.
You may have heard of the S.S. Republic Shipwreck and the incredible hoard of coins that were salvaged starting in 2003. What you may not know is that, for the first time in history, NGC has classified some of the rare 1861-O Silver Dollars as being uniquely minted by the “Confederate States of America.”
Historic Shipwreck Coins
In 1865 the S.S. Republic set sail from New York to New Orleans loaded with a treasure hoard of newly minted U.S. coins. After sinking in a hurricane off the coast of Georgia, the ship was untouched on the ocean floor until the recovery 138 years later. Now, in an historic release, NGC has certified some of the incredible1861-O Seated Liberty Half Dollars as both "S.S. Republic" coins and struck by the "Confederate States of America."
First Time Ever "Confederate States of America" Release
The 1861-O Seated Liberty Half Dollar is unique in American history as the only coin known to be struck while the New Orleans Mint was under the control of three different governments— first the Union, then the State of Louisiana when they had seceded from the Union, and finally the Confederate States of America after Louisiana joined the Confederacy.
The major problem with these Seated Liberty Half Dollar coins was how to identify which were ones were struck under each government. Through tedious microscopic examination of tiny die break lines, numismatists sorted out which dies struck each coin. We are convinced that the 1861-O Half Dollars newly identified as being minted by the "Confederate States of America" will be highly sought after and will sell out quickly.
Unique Presentation Case
Collectors will appreciate the beautifully crafted wooden display case created exclusively for this release. The outside has been laser engraved with a likeness of the S.S. Republic steamship. Inside is an excellent DVD documentary produced by National Geographic, as well as a full color booklet detailing the history of the coins as having survived this rare archeological find.
