1705-1710 Mexican 2 Escudo (from the 1715 Fleet Shipwreck) NGC MS-63
We just acquired this interesting piece of Old World Gold that stands out on its own merit but also makes an ideal edition to any collection of Spanish Escudos or Shipwreck coins.
In the 18th century, Florida was a remote outpost of the Spanish Empire. After exploring the New World, fleets of Spanish ships would often stop in Florida prior to the long journey across the ocean to deliver gold and silver back home to Spain.
Such was the case on July 31, 1715 when a massive hurricane sunk most of a group of Spanish galleons off the Florida coast in what's known today as the Spanish Fleet Shipwreck of 1715. This impressive 2 Escudo was recovered from the Fleet Shipwreck and is the absolute finest known for this rare type.
It's amazing when a 300 year old shipwreck coin like this is found in superb uncirculated quality like this high-end Mint State-63 and it's easy to see a ton of value at well under $10K for a top-graded piece.
