Calabria Silver Didrachm | NGC | MS 4x4
Taras was a Greek colony located in modern day Taranto, in southern Italy, established by refugees of Sparta in 706 B.C. Situated on the shore of a naturally formed harbor, Taras flourished as a crucial maritime commercial port, its prosperity requiring the protection of skilled military forces. The Tarantines therefore minted a large amount of silver Didrachms in order to pay the wages of the city's dedicated soldiers.
The name of the city is derived from Taras, the son of Poseidon. Taras is portrayed on the reverse, riding a dolphin. The image illustrates the myth that Poseidon sent a dolphin to rescue Taras after a shipwreck.
The obverse depicts a youth on horseback holding a torch horse in full stride. This image commemorates the collective passion of the population of Taras for breeding and care of horses.
