Philip II Gold Stater | Colophon | NGC | MS 4x4 - Fine Style
This remarkable 2,300 year-old gold stater was struck using the design types of Philip II (ATG’s father) shortly after the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC. It is an issue of Philip III, Alexander’s half-brother, and follows in the coining tradition established by their father Philip II. The important change, however, lies in the depiction of Apollo’s head: Some scholars have seen in these features the portrait of Alexander himself, making this an extremely desirable issue.
As such, this very limited issue may well be the earliest and only numismatic portrait of Alexander the Great. If you’re looking for a centerpiece ancient gold coin, this mint state example in fine style is hard to beat. The artistry is far superior to most anything from this period in human history. Coin shown is the exact coin you will receive.
