This spectacular 1504–1549 D-S Spain 1 Escudo, cataloged as Calicó Type-199 and graded Mint State 63 by PCGS, is a stunning artifact from the early Renaissance era of Spanish coinage, struck during the reign of Charles I (also known as Holy Roman Emperor Charles V). It is remarkably well-preserved for a hammered gold coin produced over 475 years ago.

Struck at the Seville Mint, as indicated by the “S” mintmark and “D” assayer initial, this early escudo represents one of Spain’s very first gold denominations issued after the unification of the crowns under Ferdinand and Isabella. These coins played a crucial role in Spain's economic rise during its global ascent in the early 16th century. Only 34 of these are certified in all grades and this razor sharp MS63 is one of 5 in the grade with just 3 finer.

The obverse features a finely detailed shield of arms, crowned and bold, with minimal die wear—an exceptional detail level for a hand-struck issue. The sharpness of the strike, particularly in the central motifs, is highly unusual for the type and era.

On the reverse, a crisp cross fleury dominates the field, framed by a quatrefoil or lobed border that gives the design a balanced, ornamental elegance. Portions of the outer legend are still visible, further supporting the coin’s outstanding condition and authenticity.

Struck in .920 fine gold, this single Escudo was a workhorse of Spanish commerce and colonial expansion. It circulated widely across Europe and the New World during an era when Spain’s empire spanned continents.

Certified in Mint State 63, this coin is a rare survivor in such a high grade. Most examples from this early period show extensive wear, so the superb surface quality and sharp devices make this piece a trophy-level addition to any collection of Spanish or early world gold.
