1516–56 Spain | 1 Escudo | Seville Mint (S D) | NGC MS-63

Struck during the early reign of King Charles I of Spain (later known as Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor), this gold 1 Escudo is a stunning representation of Spain’s numismatic legacy during its age of global expansion. Certified Mint State 63 by NGC, it showcases superior preservation, exceptional strike detail, and vibrant original luster—traits rarely seen in coins of this period.  Out of the 59 examples ever certified of this date, just four are better than this.

The obverse features the crowned coat of arms of Spain, symbolizing the unification of the kingdoms of Castile and León, and is flanked by ornate borders. Beneath the shield, the “S D” mintmark indicates this coin was struck at the Seville Mint, with “D” identifying the assayer. This side boasts crisp definition, deeply impressed legends, and a full, centered strike.

On the reverse is the ornamental cross potent, a bold symbol of Spanish Catholic power and conquest. The arms of the cross terminate in fleurs-de-lis and quatrefoil designs, all within a quatrefoil border. The reverse is equally well-preserved, with intricate detail that’s seldom seen in hammered gold coinage.

This coin was minted between 1516 and 1556, during a pivotal era when Spain became the most powerful empire in the world. Under Charles I, Spain expanded rapidly into the Americas, becoming a dominant European power. Gold coinage from this period reflects both the wealth pouring in from the New World and the craftsmanship of Spain’s premier mints, like Seville, which handled much of the empire’s precious metal.

This exquisite example of early Spanish gold is available for purchase through Austin Rare Coins & Bullion. With its eye appeal, historical significance, and certified Mint State condition, it is a superb addition to any advanced world coin collection. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
