1556-87 Spain | 4 Escudo | PCGS | AU-53
1556–87 Spain | 4 Escudo | Seville Mint | PCGS AU-53
Struck at the Seville Mint during the reign of King Philip II (1556–1598), this 4 Escudo gold coin represents a golden era in Spanish history—an age of imperial power, exploration, and artistic achievement. Of all the denominations of escudos, the four is the most scarce--just 13 of this date are certified in all grades combined and the overall look of this AU-58 is outstanding.
Graded About Uncirculated-53 by PCGS, this coin shows only light wear on the highest points, with much of its original luster still intact. On the obverse, a crowned shield of Spain stands boldly—symbolizing the unity of Castile, León, Aragon, and other Spanish realms under Philip II’s vast rule. The reverse features the elegant Jerusalem cross, a hallmark of Spanish gold coinage from this era.
Minted in Seville (denoted by the “SD” mintmark), this coin was not colonial but rather part of Spain’s domestic production of high-value coinage. These coins were used in international trade and often stored as wealth by the elite.
The combination of rich golden hue, historical significance, and high grade makes this piece a standout for collectors of Spanish and early modern European coinage.
