1566-87 Spain | 2 Escudo | PCGS | AU-58

This striking 1566–1587 SD Spain 2 Escudo, cataloged as Calicó-828 and certified About Uncirculated-58 by PCGS, is an impressive survivor from the height of Spanish imperial power. Struck in Seville during the reign of King Philip II, this gold cob captures the raw, hand-hammered artistry of Spain’s early machine-age minting tradition.

The obverse features a stylized crowned Habsburg shield, rich in symbols of Spanish dominion over Europe and the New World. Even with the irregularity typical of cobs, the major elements of the coat of arms remain bold and distinguishable, a testament to the strength of the original strike and the coin’s excellent preservation.

On the reverse, a finely detailed Jerusalem cross is set within a quatrefoil border, flanked by the mintmark “S” for Seville and the assayer’s initial “D.” Traces of the Latin motto and outer legends can still be seen along the broad flan, adding historical texture to an already captivating design.

Struck in .875 fine gold, this 2 Escudo was part of the monetary backbone of the Spanish Empire—a denomination widely used for trade, tribute, and military finance during Spain’s Golden Age. Coins like this would have been struck manually between curved dies, resulting in unique shapes and alignment for every piece. The coin is incredibly rare, one of just 26 total ever certified and the details on this coin are simply extraordinary.

The coin’s PCGS AU-58 designation speaks to its sharp detail, minimal wear, and strong overall eye appeal—exceptional for a hammered gold issue nearly 450 years old. With strong detail, full weight, and certified authenticity, this piece offers both historical importance and visual impact.

A remarkable artifact from the rule of Philip II—the monarch behind the Spanish Armada and the expansion of Spain’s global reach—this 2 Escudo cob belongs in any serious collection of Spanish or colonial gold.
