This remarkable 1584-86 England Gold Sovereign was issued during the reign of Elizabeth I, representing one of the most iconic periods in English monetary history. It is without question one of the finest British gold coins we have ever had the privelege of offering and is renowned around the globe as a classic rarity in any condition.  It is typically available for public sale one or two times a decade, and is absolutely one of the finest examples known in the world today.

Insanely rare, NGC has seen only 9 submissions of this issue in all with this being the only in MS62 with a sole MS63 example known finer.  Notably, in January of 2026 an AU58+ example sold publicly for $58,560 leading us to believe that the asking price is completely justifiable. This is a museum-quality coin by every stretch of the imagination.

The obverse displays Queen Elizabeth I seated on an elaborate throne beneath a canopy, holding an orb and scepter as symbols of her divine authority. The Latin legend ELIZABETH D G ANG FR ET HIB REGINA circles the portrait, proclaiming her dominion over England, France, and Ireland. The reverse features the iconic Tudor rose within an ornate design, beautifully executed especially since it was hand-hammered over 450 years ago.  Gold sovereigns from this time frame were the largest British gold coins ever issued and were essentially presentation pieces reserved for nobles and aristocrats.

Graded Mint State-62 by NGC, this sovereign exhibits attractive golden surfaces with well-defined detail throughout the design elements. The coin displays amazing originality and blazing luster for the grade with minimal contact marks, making it an appealing example of this historically significant issue. Collectors prize Elizabethan sovereigns for their artistic merit and historical importance during England's golden age.

Note: This coin was certified by PCGS over 15 years ago and is in an older holder that covers up the edges of the coin--we are going to have the coin re-holdered in a new PCGS holder to display all the intricate details of the coin as soon as possible.
