1791 | Colombia | 8 Escudo | PCGS AU-50

This impressive 1791-P-SF Colombia 8 Escudo, graded About Uncirculated 50 by PCGS, is a superb example of late Spanish colonial gold struck in the Bogotá mint during the reign of King Charles IV.

The obverse features a finely detailed right-facing bust of Charles IV, with CAROL·IIII·D·G on the left and HISP·ET IND·R on the right—abbreviating Carolus IIII Dei Gratia, Hispaniarum et Indiarum Rex (“Charles IV, by the Grace of God, King of the Spains and the Indies”). The date 1791 is positioned just beneath the bust.

The reverse displays the crowned Spanish shield surrounded by rich, ornate detailing. This intricate border forms a full inner circle around the shield and is enclosed by the Latin legend:
IN·UTROQ·FELIX·AUSPICE·DEO, meaning “In both worlds, fortunate under the auspices of God.”

Struck in Bogotá and identified by the P mintmark and SF assayer initials, this gold 8 Escudo was the largest denomination of its time and circulated as high-value currency across Spain’s vast colonial empire. Struck in .875 fine gold, its broad flan and clean fields showcase both the craftsmanship of the era and the coin’s well-preserved condition.

With strong visual appeal and excellent historical importance, this 1791 Colombian 8 Escudo is a standout addition for collectors focused on Spanish colonial, Latin American, or gold type coinage.
