Struck at the historic Potosí Mint, this 1797-PTS-PP Bolivia 8 Escudo is a remarkable survivor from the Spanish colonial era. Certified About Uncirculated 53 by PCGS, it showcases both regal design and historical depth from the late 18th century under the reign of King Charles IV.

The obverse features a refined right-facing bust of Charles IV, surrounded by the Latin inscription:
CAROL·IIII·D·G on the left and HISP·ET IND·R on the right—short for Carolus IIII Dei Gratia, Hispaniarum et Indiarum Rex, or “Charles IV, by the Grace of God, King of the Spains and the Indies.” The date 1797 appears clearly beneath the portrait.

The reverse presents the crowned Spanish shield, framed by an ornate circular border of intricate scrollwork. Surrounding the inner design is the full Latin legend:
IN·UTROQ·FELIX·AUSPICE·DEO—translated as “In both worlds, fortunate under the auspices of God.”

The PTS mintmark and PP assayer initials confirm its origin in Potosí, one of the most prolific and important mints in Spanish South America. Struck in .875 fine gold, the 8 Escudo was the highest denomination of gold coinage in circulation at the time and a direct representation of royal authority and economic dominance in the New World.

This coin shares much of its design with its Colombian counterpart but remains distinct in its mint origin and subtle stylistic details, particularly in the reverse ornamentation and die work.
