1798-So Santiago, Chile 8 Escudo – PCGS AU53
This handsome 1798 Santiago, Chile 8 Escudo, graded AU53 by PCGS, is a prime example of late 18th-century Spanish colonial gold minted at the foot of the Andes. Struck during the reign of Charles IV, this coin reflects both imperial authority and exceptional craftsmanship from the Santiago Mint.
The obverse presents a right-facing bust of King Charles IV, with well-preserved features and strong detail despite light circulation. Surrounding the portrait is the Latin legend:
CAROL·IIII·D·G on the left, and HISP·ET IND·R on the right, abbreviating Charles IV, by the Grace of God, King of the Spains and the Indies. The date 1798 is clearly positioned below the bust.
The reverse showcases the crowned Spanish shield, framed by a circular decorative band that adds depth and balance to the design. Around the perimeter, the familiar inscription reads:
IN·UTROQ·FELIX·AUSPICE·DEO—translated as “In both worlds, fortunate under the guidance of God.”
The coin bears the “So” mintmark indicating Santiago, along with the correct assayer initials for this period. Struck in .875 fine gold, this 8 Escudo served as high-value currency throughout the Spanish territories in South America and beyond, reinforcing Spain’s control over the colonial economy.
Its PCGS AU53 grade confirms sharp design elements, clean legends, and attractive color. With historic appeal and classic styling, this Chilean 8 Escudo makes a worthy addition to any collection of Spanish colonial or Latin American gold.
