1807 | Chile | 8 Escudo | PCGS AU-55
This 1807-So-FJ Chile 8 Escudo, certified About Uncirculated 55 by PCGS, is a striking gold issue from the colonial mint at Santiago. Issued under the rule of King Charles IV, it reflects the elegant, authoritative style typical of late Spanish South American coinage.
The obverse features a clean, right-facing portrait of Charles IV. The Latin legend curves along the rim with CAROL·IIII·D·G to the left and HISP·ET IND·R to the right—signifying Charles IV, by the Grace of God, King of the Spains and the Indies. The date 1807 appears clearly below the bust, marking one of the final years of his reign before the political upheaval of Napoleon’s influence in Spain.
On the reverse, the crowned Spanish shield is sharply struck and surrounded by a detailed ornamental border that gives the coin a bold, regal appearance. Encircling this central design is the classic Latin phrase:
IN·UTROQ·FELIX·AUSPICE·DEO, or “In both worlds, fortunate under the auspices of God.”
Struck in .875 fine gold, this large 8 Escudo was the highest denomination produced in colonial Chile and a key representation of Spain’s wealth and power in the region. The “So” mintmark and “FJ” assayer initials tie this example directly to the Santiago Mint, known for its consistent quality and lower mintages compared to other Spanish American facilities.
With its attractive toning, crisp devices, and a high AU55 grade from PCGS, this coin offers a rare combination of quality, beauty, and historical importance. It’s a standout piece for collectors focused on South American colonial gold or the broader Spanish imperial series.
