This 1808-M 2 Escudos was struck at the Madrid mint during the final year of Charles III's coinage designs, as Spain stood on the brink of the Peninsular War and Napoleonic occupation. Though Charles III died in 1788, his portrait continued to appear on Spanish gold coinage through 1808 under his successor Charles IV, making these later-dated issues particularly interesting transitional pieces. The 2 Escudos denomination served as a workhorse gold coin in Spanish commerce and colonial trade, and examples from the Madrid mint are prized for their consistent quality and historical significance.

The obverse presents a well-executed right-facing laureate bust of Charles III in armor with draped cloak, the portrait rendered in sharp relief with crisp facial features and excellent detail in the hair and drapery. The legend reads "CAROL·III·D·G·HISPAN·ET IND·R" in clear, evenly struck letters around the rim. The reverse displays the crowned Spanish coat of arms with Castile, León, Aragón, and the Two Sicilies quarterings, surrounded by the Order of the Golden Fleece and framed by pillars with banners. The date "1808" appears below the shield with the "M" mint mark clearly visible, while the legend "UTROQ·FELIX·AUSPICE·DEO" encircles the design.

Graded NGC AU58, this 2 Escudos exhibits attractive golden-yellow surfaces with subtle orange highlights and excellent eye appeal for the grade. Light high-point wear is visible on the portrait's cheek and the shield's central devices, while the fields retain pleasing semi-reflective luster. The strike is bold throughout with full denticles and complete legends. This coin represents significant condition rarity—only 46 examples have been graded by NGC across all grades, with just 12 pieces certified at AU58 and only 10 finer. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
