1810 | Colombia - Calico | 8 Escudo | PCGS AU-53
This impressive 1810-P-JF Colombia 8 Escudo, graded About Uncirculated 53 by PCGS, is a historic gold issue struck in Bogotá at the very dawn of Colombia’s fight for independence. It is cataloged as Calicó-1809, confirming its place in the definitive reference for Spanish colonial gold coinage.
The obverse features a sharp, right-facing bust of King Charles IV, framed by the classic Latin legend:
CAROL·IIII·D·G on the left and HISP·ET IND·R on the right—abbreviating Charles IV, by the Grace of God, King of the Spains and the Indies. The date 1810 is neatly placed below the portrait.
The reverse displays the crowned Spanish royal arms, rendered with clarity and framed by a richly ornamental circular border. Around the outer edge is the enduring Latin motto:
IN·UTROQ·FELIX·AUSPICE·DEO—“In both worlds, fortunate under the protection of God.”
Struck in .875 fine gold, this coin carries the “P” mintmark and “JF” assayer initials, linking it directly to the Bogotá Mint. Notably, this was among the final issues of the Spanish crown in New Granada, minted in the same year Colombia began its push for sovereignty—giving this piece added historical weight.
Listed as Calicó-1809, it stands as a highly collectible example from one of the most pivotal years in Latin American history. With original surfaces, crisp legends, and PCGS-certified AU53 quality, this coin offers powerful crossover appeal for both history enthusiasts and serious gold collectors.
