1812 Santiago, Chile 8 Escudo NGC MS-64

The 8 Escudo gold coin from Colonial Chile ranks among the most elusive large gold issues of the Spanish colonial world, and this 1812 Santiago example - certified MS-64 by NGC - belongs to a population so thin it would make most advanced collectors stop cold. Struck at the Santiago Mint under Ferdinand VII while Chile was still firmly under Spanish colonial rule, the 8 Escudo represented the largest gold denomination of the empire, circulating across two hemispheres at a moment when the colonial order was beginning to fracture. Of the entire 1812-SO FJ date, only 59 examples have ever been certified by NGC - across all grades - making survivors in any condition genuinely scarce.
The obverse presents a right-facing portrait of Ferdinand VII with flowing hair and regal military dress, rendered in bold relief against glowing, near-mirror fields. The legend FERDIN·VII·D·G·HISP·ET·IND·R runs along the periphery with strong legibility, and the date 1812 appears at the base. The reverse displays the ornate crowned Royal Arms of Spain - the quartered shield bearing the castles of Castile and the lions of León - flanked by the denomination 8 and mint mark S, with the full outer legend intact and sharp. The strike is characteristically full for the issue, and the natural satin-to-mirror surface character is immediately apparent even in photographs.
NGC has certified this coin MS-64, and the population context is extraordinary by any measure: there are just 5 examples in MS-63 for the date, and this is one of only 4 coins certified MS-64 — with none finer for the 1812-SO FJ date. To place that in broader perspective, across the entire 1779-1818 Santiago 8 Escudo series, only three coins have ever reached gem MS-65, and this date has produced none finer than MS-64. Only 14 coins from the entire 1779-1818 period have reached the MS-64 level across all dates and assayers. The shiny, near-mirrored fields on this coin are a genuine rarity for any Spanish colonial gold of this era; finding this level of preservation in a coin over two centuries old is the kind of thing that defines a collection rather than simply filling a slot. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
