Most coins recovered from the SS Central America were $20 gold coins struck in 1856 or 1857 at the San Francisco Mint. The really rare coins were those that were NOT from those dates. Why? Because they somehow made their way on board the ill-fated vessel and sunk along with the rest of the cargo and crew where they remained for nearly 150 years until they were recovered. This particular coin, an 1851 New Orleans Half Eagle,is graded by PCGS in Very Fine-20 condition and is pedigreed to the SS Central America shipwreck, one of a handful recovered in any condition. Coin shown is the exact coin you will receive and is one of a kind, as such. Amazing piece of American history, highly recommended for the shipwreck enthusiast. It really makes you wonder how this coin traveled across the country from New Orleans to the West Coast and onto the SS Central America...we will never know the real story, but this is proof that it happened.
