In August of 1857, over 400 passengers and crew set sail aboard the SS Central America from San Francisco headed for New York. The so-called "Ship of Gold" contained an enormous amount of gold nuggets and bars mined during the California Gold Rush along with freshly-minted $20 gold coins struck in 1856 and 1857 from the San Francisco mint.
In September, as the ship traveled along the coast of the Carolinas it encountered a fierce hurricane, rendering the ship helpless. Within a few hours, hundreds of passengers and the entire gold treasure sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean where it remained for the next 130 years.
Gold coins from the SS Central America are highly desirable by collectors and investors around the world due to their amazing history, quality, and attractive price-points. Austin Rare Coins & Bullion is proud to be one of the few dealers who are able to offer the amazing treasure recovered from the SS Central America.
