1862-GO YE Mexico 8 Escudos NGC AU-50

This 1862-GO YE 8 Escudos represents the premier gold denomination of the Mexican Republic during a turbulent period in the nation's history. Struck at the Guanajuato mint with assayer initials YE, this issue was produced just as Mexico faced the French intervention that would soon install Maximilian I as emperor. The 8 Escudos series from this era remains highly sought after by collectors of world gold coinage, and this example has been certified by NGC.
The obverse displays the iconic "Hand on Book" design featuring the Phrygian cap of liberty atop a pole, with an open law book and cornucopia, encircled by the motto "LA LIBERTAD EN LA LEY" (Liberty in Law). The reverse presents the Mexican national arms—an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a serpent—surrounded by oak and laurel branches and the legend "REPUBLICA MEXICANA." Both sides exhibit well-defined detail with surfaces showing honest circulation consistent with the assigned grade.
NGC has graded this piece AU-50, indicating light wear on the high points while retaining much of the original detail and character. The surfaces display an even golden tone with minor contact marks typical for the grade. Mexican Republic 8 Escudos are popular among collectors of 19th-century world gold, particularly examples from regional mints like Guanajuato. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
