1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar NGC MS-67
The 1881-S Morgan Dollar reaches MS-67 here, a grade very few Morgan Dollars of any date ever earn. San Francisco struck 12,760,000 silver dollars that year, and huge quantities went straight into Treasury vaults in sealed canvas bags. Those bags stayed closed for decades, which is why the date survives with sharp strikes and original surfaces far more often than its eastern counterparts. Even so, the climb from a common gem to a full MS-67 narrows the field sharply.
George T. Morgan's Liberty faces left on the obverse, wearing a Phrygian cap wrapped with cotton bolls and wheat heads, with LIBERTY lettered across her coronet. E PLURIBUS UNUM arcs above while thirteen stars and the 1881 date frame the lower field, and the strike brings up full detail in her hair and cap. The reverse centers on an eagle with wings spread wide, clutching an olive branch and arrows, with a laurel wreath below and the S mintmark beneath the bow.
NGC graded this Morgan Dollar MS-67, with thick frosted devices standing against reflective, well-preserved fields. The luster rolls cleanly across both sides, and the cheek and eagle's breast, the two areas that usually decide a Morgan's grade, show no distracting marks. Eye appeal at this level carries the coin as much as the technical grade does, and this example delivers on both counts. A welcome addition to any set of certified Morgan Dollars assembled for quality.
