1883-S $20 Liberty Gold PCGS MS-63
The 1883-S Liberty Gold Double Eagle carried nearly the entire $20 coinage of its year, since Philadelphia struck the denomination only as proofs in 1883. San Francisco answered with 1,189,000 pieces, and most of them went straight into bank vaults or overseas shipments where hard handling took its toll. Later melts thinned the ranks again, so Mint State survivors make up only a small share of that original output.
James B. Longacre's Liberty Head faces left on the obverse, her coronet lettered LIBERTY, with thirteen stars ringing the portrait and the date below. The hair detail and star centers show sharp relief, and the legends stand crisp against the fields. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle spreads its wings behind a striped shield, with rays and stars above and IN GOD WE TRUST on the ribbon that marks the Type 3 design. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the spelled-out TWENTY DOLLARS frame the design, while the small S mintmark sits just below the eagle.
PCGS graded this double eagle MS-63, a level that keeps full mint luster across both sides with only scattered marks consistent with the grade. Warm orange-gold color covers the surfaces, and the devices retain strong definition from a solid strike. At MS-63 the coin sits in the sweet spot for this date, clean enough for display yet well above the worn and cleaned examples that fill the market. A welcome addition to any collection of Type 3 Liberty Head Double Eagles or San Francisco gold. Coin shown is the exact coin you will receive.
