1903 $20 Liberty Gold PCGS Secure MS-66 None Finer
The $20 Liberty Gold series reigned as America's premier gold coin for over half a century, and this 1903 example represents one of the finest certified survivors of its date. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint during a period of national prosperity, the Liberty Head double eagle carried real purchasing power in daily commerce. The type was designed by James B. Longacre and remained in production from 1849 through 1907.
The obverse presents a bold left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen six-pointed stars. Hair detail is sharply rendered and the date 1903 sits clearly at the bottom. The reverse features a heraldic eagle with spread wings, clutching an olive branch and arrows, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above and TWENTY DOLLARS along the lower border. Device definition is strong throughout, with excellent relief on the eagle's feathers and shield.
PCGS has graded this example MS-66, a gem Mint State level that places it among the very finest known for this date. PCGS reports a population of just 19 coins at this grade with none finer; the NGC population stands at 22 with none finer. The surfaces display rich cartwheel luster with warm original golden color and only the most minor contact marks consistent with the grade. For those seeking a gem-quality $20 Liberty with a compelling population story, this coin is a genuinely exceptional example of the type. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
