193-211 AD Roman Empire Septimius Severus Silver Denarius NGC Choice Very Fine Reverse in Holder

The Seven Hills Hoard pedigree noted on this Septimius Severus denarius ties the coin to a group of Roman silver that stayed buried rather than worn smooth in daily trade. Severus took the purple in AD 193 as the last man standing in a brutal civil war, and denarii like this one paid the legions that kept him there. Coins of his reign are widely collected, yet hoard-pedigreed pieces with this much surviving detail are a smaller group. The pedigree is recorded on the NGC label, so it travels with the coin permanently.

The obverse carries the laureate head of Septimius Severus facing right, with the emperor's tightly curled hair and forked beard rendered in sharp relief. His imperial titles run around the rim in bold Latin lettering, and the laurel wreath ties show clearly behind the neck. On the reverse a draped female figure stands facing left, extending her right hand while holding a cornucopia in her left arm, a standard personification type used across Severan silver. The reverse legend remains readable through most of its arc, and the drapery folds show good device definition.

NGC graded this denarius Choice Very Fine, a grade that keeps strong central detail while showing honest, even circulation wear on the high points. The surfaces are bright and free of the heavy encrustation common to buried silver, with light gray toning settled into the protected areas. Portrait sharpness at this level is what collectors look for in a Severan denarius, since the beard and wreath are the first details to soften. A welcome addition to any collection of Roman imperial silver or pedigreed hoard coins.
