193-211 AD Roman Empire Septimius Severus Silver Denarius Seven Hills Hoard NGC Choice Very Fine
Hoard pedigrees rarely stay attached to an ancient coin, yet this Septimius Severus denarius carries one, attributed by NGC to the Seven Hills Hoard. Severus seized the throne in AD 193 after a brutal civil war, and he kept it by paying his legions better than any emperor before him. Silver like this funded those armies across the frontier, so a documented hoard source gives the piece a traceable history that most Roman denarii simply cannot claim.
The obverse shows the laureate head of Severus facing right, his curled beard and tight hair rendered in sharp relief. The surrounding legend, L SEPT SEV AVG IMP XI PART MAX, records his Parthian victories and remains readable across the upper field. On the reverse, Concordia stands between two military standards with the legend CONCORDIA MILITVM, a direct appeal to the loyalty of the troops. The strike is well centered, with strong device definition in the drapery and standards.
NGC Ancients graded this denarius Choice Very Fine, a grade that reflects even, honest circulation wear and no distracting marks. The surfaces are bright silver with light patina in the protected areas, and the portrait retains bold facial detail where these types usually soften first. Eye appeal runs above average for the grade, and the hoard attribution on the holder adds a layer of provenance that collectors of Severan silver appreciate. A welcome addition to any collection of Roman imperial denarii or documented hoard coins.
