209-211 AD Roman Empire Geta Silver Denarius Seven Hills Hoard NGC Choice Very Fine
Caracalla had his younger brother Geta murdered in AD 211 and ordered his name chiseled off monuments across the empire, which is why surviving coins of Geta carry real weight with Roman collectors. This silver denarius names him as Caesar, the junior rank he held under his father Septimius Severus, and it comes with a documented pedigree to the Seven Hills Hoard. Hoard coins like this one were buried during the turbulent Severan years and stayed in the ground for centuries. A named hoard provenance adds a layer of history that most denarii of this era simply do not have.
The obverse shows a youthful bare-headed bust of Geta facing right, with a draped shoulder and carefully engraved curls framing a boyish profile. The surrounding legend P SEPTIMIVS GETA CAES reads clearly across the upper field, and the beaded border remains largely complete. On the reverse, Providentia stands left in flowing drapery, holding a wand over a globe at her feet while a long scepter rises behind her. The legend PROVID DEORVM circles the figure, a standard Severan appeal to the foresight of the gods.
NGC Ancients graded this denarius Choice Very Fine. The portrait keeps strong hair and facial detail, while the silver surfaces show even light toning with faint earthen traces from long burial. Centering is pleasing on both sides, with the legends readable and the reverse figure well defined from head to base. For those seeking an attractive, well-identified denarius of Geta with a named hoard pedigree, this coin delivers on both history and eye appeal.
