Philip I came to power through one of Rome's most dramatic palace coups, and his five-year reign produced some of the most carefully crafted silver coinage of the third century AD. Known as Philip the Arab, he ruled from 244 to 249 AD after engineering the death of the young emperor Gordian III on campaign in Persia.
