Philip I came to power through one of Rome's most dramatic palace coups, and his five-year reign produced some of the most carefully crafted silver coinage of the third century AD. Known as Philip the Arab, he ruled from 244 to 249 AD after engineering the death of the young emperor Gordian III on campaign in Persia. This silver double-denarius, also called an antoninianus, was struck during his reign and carries the personification of Tranquillitas on the reverse, a deliberate message of stability in an era of near-constant military unrest.

The obverse presents a bold radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Philip I facing right, surrounded by his imperial titulature. The portrait shows strong relief and clear definition in the facial features, beard, and radiate crown. On the reverse, Tranquillitas stands facing left, holding a scepter and a small figure of Pegasus, with the legend TRANQUILLITAS AVGG arcing around the field. The strike is confident and the reverse figure is well-centered with good detail throughout.

NGC Ancients certified this coin Mint State with Strike 4 and Surface 4, placing it among the finer survivors of this type. The surfaces show an attractive silver-gray patina with no significant cleaning or damage. Philip I antoninianii in Mint State are genuinely scarce, and this example's clear portraiture and appealing Tranquillitas reverse make it a strong candidate for a Roman imperial or third-century type collection. For those seeking a problem-free, certified example of Philip the Arab in the highest circulated grades, this coin delivers. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
