Philip I rose to power under remarkable circumstances, seizing the throne after the death of Gordian III on campaign in Persia. He ruled as Rome's emperor from 244 to 249 AD. This silver Double-Denarius, also called an antoninianus, was struck during his reign and captures his image in the imperial tradition of radiate-crowned portraiture.

The obverse presents a bold right-facing bust of Philip I wearing a radiate crown and imperial paludamentum. The legend reads IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG, clearly identifying the emperor. On the reverse, Roma stands facing left, helmeted and holding a spear and shield, with the legend ROMAE AETERNAE honoring the eternal city of Rome.
