27 BC-14 AD Augustus Silver Denarius Lugdunum NGC Choice Very Fine

This silver denarius of Augustus was struck at the Lugdunum mint between 27 BC and 14 AD, representing one of the most significant coinages of the early Roman Empire. Augustus, the first Roman Emperor, established Lugdunum (modern Lyon) as a major minting facility to serve the western provinces. This issue celebrates the legendary founders of Rome, Gaius and Lucius Caesar, who were Augustus's adopted heirs and grandsons.
The obverse displays the laureate head of Augustus facing right with the inscription CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE. The reverse features Gaius and Lucius Caesar standing facing each other, holding shields and spears, with priestly implements including a lituus and simpulum above, and the inscription C L CAESARES AVGVSTI F COS DESIG PRINC IVVENT.
NGC has graded this denarius Choice Very Fine, reflecting well-preserved surfaces with clear legend visibility and strong portrait definition. The silvery-gray patina exhibits attractive even toning typical of ancient Roman silver. This type represents an important historical document of Augustus's dynastic intentions and remains highly sought after by collectors of Roman Imperial coinage.
