305-281 BC Kingdom of Thrace Lysimachus Silver Tetradrachm NGC Choice About Uncirculated 5x3

This silver tetradrachm was struck in the Kingdom of Thrace under Lysimachus between 305-281 BC. Lysimachus was one of Alexander the Great's most trusted generals and bodyguards, who became ruler of Thrace after Alexander's death in 323 BC. This coin represents the Hellenistic period when Alexander's empire was divided among his successors, known as the Diadochi.
The obverse displays the idealized portrait of Alexander the Great facing right, adorned with the ram's horn of Zeus-Ammon, symbolizing his divine status and conquests in Egypt. The reverse features Athena seated left, holding Nike in her extended right hand and resting her left arm on a shield, with the inscription ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ (King Lysimachus) around the border. The seated Athena design reflects the influence of classical Greek coinage and emphasizes wisdom and victory.
This example has been graded Choice About Uncirculated by NGC with exceptional technical marks of Strike 5/5 and Surface 3/5. The coin displays attractive gray toning with well-defined details in Alexander's portrait and clear definition in Athena's figure. Tetradrachms of Lysimachus are highly sought after by collectors of ancient Greek and Hellenistic coinage. The coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive.
