This Siculo-Punic silver tetradrachm from Sicily dates to circa 320-300 BC, struck during the period when Carthaginian influence dominated the western regions of the island. The coin was minted in the Greek colonial tradition but under Punic authority, representing the cultural intersection between Greek artistic excellence and Carthaginian political control. This tetradrachm weighs 17.12 grams and represents one of the finest examples of ancient Mediterranean coinage from this historically significant period.

The obverse features the head of Arethusa facing left, wreathed with reeds and wearing a pearl necklace and triple-pendant earring, with four dolphins swimming around within a dotted border. The nymph's portrait displays well-defined features and elegant styling characteristic of Syracusan die engravers, executed in the classical Greek style with exceptional artistry. The reverse depicts the head and neck of horse left with a palm tree bearing two clusters of dates behind, surrounded by a linear border. The Punic inscription MMHNT' meaning "People of the Camp" appears on the reverse, symbolizing Carthaginian authority over the region while maintaining traditional Greek iconography.

This specimen has been graded AU★ by NGC with a strike rating of 5/5 and surface quality of 5/5, indicating exceptional preservation and striking quality with Fine style designation. The coin exhibits perfect centering on both obverse and reverse, allowing complete visibility of all intricate details. Deep reliefs showcase impressively intricate craftsmanship throughout both sides. The coin displays attractive dark patina with well-preserved details that highlight the masterful die work.

Referenced as SNG Copenhagen 979, HGC 2, 284, and Jenkins 174-175, this represents the horse-head reverse variety among the known types. With only 144 total examples in the NGC population census, including just 17 graded Choice AU and only 2 achieving Mint State designation, this coin represents exceptional rarity in the ancient numismatic market. Siculo-Punic tetradrachms are highly sought after by collectors of ancient Greek and Punic coinage for their historical significance and artistic merit, making this specimen essential for the finest collection of ancients.
