42 BC Marcus Junius Brutus Libertas Silver Denarius NGC Choice Very Fine

This silver denarius of Marcus Junius Brutus was struck circa 42 BC during the final phase of the Roman Republic's civil wars following the assassination of Julius Caesar. Brutus, one of Caesar's assassins and a leading defender of the republican cause, issued coinage to fund his military campaign against the forces of Mark Antony and Octavian in the eastern provinces.
The obverse features the head of Libertas facing right with the inscription BRVTVS. Libertas, the Roman personification of liberty, symbolized the political ideals Brutus claimed to defend in opposing Caesar's dictatorship. The reverse depicts a lyre between two fillets with the legend CAEPIO BRVTVS PRO COS, referencing Brutus' authority as proconsul. This design reflects both the cultural symbolism and political messaging common in late Republican coinage.
NGC has graded this example Choice Very Fine with a strong strike (5/5) and noted surface quality of 2/5. The coin exhibits typical ancient circulation wear along with edge chips and evidence of brushing noted by the grading service. Coins struck under Brutus during the civil wars remain historically significant artifacts from one of the most dramatic periods in Roman history.
