This billon tetradrachm was struck in Alexandria, Egypt, during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (AD 117-138), one of Rome's most accomplished and widely-traveled rulers. The Alexandrian mint produced distinctive provincial coinage in billon - a debased silver alloy - that circulated primarily within Egypt and reflected the region's unique blend of Greek, Roman, and Egyptian traditions. Hadrian visited Egypt in AD 130-131, a journey commemorated in various coin types, and his reign marked a period of relative stability and cultural flourishing throughout the empire. This piece has been certified Very Fine by NGC Ancients, representing solid preservation for a circulated provincial issue nearly 1,900 years old.
The obverse features a laureate and draped bust of Hadrian facing right, rendered in the provincial style characteristic of Alexandrian engravers. The emperor's portrait displays moderate wear consistent with the grade, yet retains clear facial features and crown detail. The reverse depicts a reclining Nilus, the personification of the Nile River, holding a reed and cornucopia while a crocodile appears below - imagery celebrating Egypt's agricultural abundance and the life-giving waters of the Nile. The design elements show even wear with legible devices, and the surfaces exhibit an attractive gray-green patina typical of billon coinage from this mint.
Graded Very Fine by NGC Ancients, this tetradrachm displays honest circulation wear with devices remaining well-defined and centered on the flan. The patina is stable and appealing, and the strike preserves sufficient detail to appreciate both the imperial portrait and the mythological reverse imagery. Provincial Roman coinage from Alexandria remains popular among collectors of imperial portraiture and regional issues, offering accessible entry points into Hadrian's extensive coinage while connecting directly to Egypt's ancient heritage.
