AD 238-244 Roman Empire Gordian III Silver Double-Denarius NGC Mint State

Gordian III ruled the Roman Empire from AD 238 to 244, ascending to the throne at roughly thirteen years of age - the youngest sole emperor in Roman history. His reign followed the turbulent Year of the Six Emperors, during which his grandfather Gordian I and uncle Gordian II both perished in their brief claims to power. Despite his youth, Gordian III's administration oversaw a period of relative stability, supported by capable advisors including the Praetorian Prefect Timesitheus. This silver double-denarius, also known as an antoninianus, was struck at the Rome mint during his reign and is certified by NGC Ancients.

The obverse presents a radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Gordian III facing right, rendered with sharp detail in the portrait and clear legend. The radiate crown distinguishes the double-denarius denomination from the standard denarius. The reverse depicts a standing draped figure facing left, rendered with well-defined drapery folds and bold device definition. The surrounding legend is largely complete and legible, and the strike is well-centered on both sides.
