AD 260-269 Romano-Gallic Empire Postumus Billon Double-Denarius NGC Mint State

Postumus ruled the breakaway Gallic Empire from AD 260 to 269, a period of profound instability known to historians as the Crisis of the Third Century. As the first and longest-reigning of the Gallic emperors, Postumus maintained effective control over Gaul, Britain, and parts of Hispania while successfully defending his realm against both Germanic incursions and Roman reconquest attempts. This billon double-denarius, also known as an antoninianus, represents the standard silver-alloy coinage of his administration, certified by NGC Ancients.
The obverse presents a radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Postumus facing right, rendered with bold definition and strong portrait detail. The surrounding legend IMP C POSTVMVS P F AVG identifies the emperor with his full imperial titles. The reverse features a standing figure, likely representing Pax or a similar deity, with clear device definition and visible legend elements around the periphery.
NGC has certified this example in Mint State condition, indicating preservation with original surfaces and minimal circulation wear. The coin displays an appealing dark patina consistent with aged billon, with well-defined devices on both sides and intact legends. Double-denarii of Postumus remain popular among collectors of Roman provincial coinage and those assembling collections of the Crisis of the Third Century period.
