Arsinoe II under Ptolemy V | Gold Octodrachm | Choice About Unc.
This is not your typical Egyptian Gold Octodrachm...it was struck under Ptolemy V prior to his wedding ceremony to Cleopatra I and is one of just seven examples known and the only one ever certified by NGC Ancients.
Coins such as this are extremely desirable due to their immense size, beauty, rarity and historic importance. This is the only example of this rare issue that we've ever handled in 35 years of business.
The obverse features the veiled and diademed bust of Arsinoe II, wearing a stephane and veil, with a subtle sense of divinity that reflects her deified status. The reverse depicts two diademed cornucopias bound together, overflowing with fruit, symbolizing prosperity and abundance under the Ptolemaic dynasty. This issue differs from earlier issues due to the marking above the bust on the obverse and the small horizontal lines on the ribbons of the cornucopia on the reverse.
Weighing just under a full ounce of gold at nearly 28 grams, the gold octodrachm is the largest denomination of gold coins ever produced in the ancient world. This particular coin is certified by NGC as Choice About Uncirculated, with a perfect Strike 5/5 and Surface 3/5. It displays sharp details and strong eye appeal, making it a highly desirable specimen. NGC has notated brushed on the holder, referring to hairline scratches seen under magnification.
An extraordinary blend of history, artistry, and rarity, this gold octodrachm of Arsinoe II stands as one of the most iconic issues of the Ptolemaic Kingdom.
