c. 121-91 BC Parthian Kingdom Mithradates II Silver Drachm NGC Mint State

Mithradates II, often called "the Great," reigned over the Parthian Empire from approximately 121 to 91 BC and is widely regarded as the most powerful and accomplished ruler of the Arsacid dynasty. Under his leadership, Parthia expanded from the borders of Mesopotamia and Armenia in the west to the frontiers of Bactria in the east, establishing the empire as a true superpower of the ancient world. This silver drachm, certified by NGC Ancients as Mint State, was struck during his reign and bears the royal titles that proclaimed his authority as King of Kings.
The obverse presents a bold, left-facing bust of Mithradates II with a long, pointed beard and diademed tiara adorned with star and crescent devices. The portrait displays strong definition in the facial features, beard, and hair curls, with the torque and drapery rendered in sharp relief. The reverse depicts the dynastic founder Arsaces I enthroned right in traditional Parthian dress, holding a bow outward, surrounded by a Greek inscription reading ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΝ ΜΕΓΑΛΟΥ ΑΡΣΑΚΟΥ ΕΠΙΦΑΝΟΥΣ ("of the Great King of Kings Arsaces, the Illustrious"), all enclosed within an ivy wreath border.
Graded Mint State by NGC Ancients, this drachm exhibits well-preserved surfaces with bold device definition on both sides. The strike is well-centered with strong detail retained across the portrait and reverse archer figure. Drachms of Mithradates II remain a cornerstone of Parthian numismatics and are widely sought after by collectors of ancient Persian and Hellenistic-era coinage.
