54 B.C. Coson | "Brutus" Gold Stater | Choice Uncirculated
These fascinating Coson gold staters were struck over 2,100 years ago and depict three soldiers in a procession on the front and an intricate Eagle holding an Olive wreath on the back. Certified by NGC Ancients in Choice Uncirculated condition, this particular example has exceptional eye appeal and a fantastic strike for the assigned grade.
These have been a mystery since a large hoard was found in Transylvania in 1543, and to this day, there are different opinions on where and why they were issued. The most prevalent is that they were struck around 43 B.C. by Marcus Junius Brutus (assassin of Julius Caesar) using a treasure provided to him by the Roman Senate so that he could use the gold to raise an army to defend the Republic against forces loyal to the assassinated Caesar.
Weighing around a quarter of an ounce of pure gold and about the size of a modern penny, they are a solid value in the ancient coin marketplace today. They have the perfect combination of gold content, rarity, quality, and history.
We love the value in Coson staters at current price levels, but they've been getting harder and harder to find at reasonable price levels. The coin shown is not the exact coin you will receive, but it is indicative of the quality you can expect.
