Domitian AV Aureus (AD 81–96) – NGC Ch VF
This magnificent gold aureus of Emperor Domitian, struck between AD 81 and 96, represents the closing chapter of the Flavian dynasty and the height of Imperial Roman artistry. As the son of Vespasian and brother of Titus, Domitian inherited an empire restored by his family’s reforms following the chaos of the first century. His coinage reflects a reign defined by military discipline, economic stability, and divine assertion of imperial authority.
The obverse depicts a laureate bust of Domitian facing right, bearing the confident expression of an emperor who consolidated power across the empire. His distinctive portrait style—with sharply defined curls and a strong profile—reflects the mature imperial portraiture of the Flavian period. The reverse features Minerva, goddess of wisdom and warfare, shown with spear and scepter, one of Domitian’s favored deities and a symbol of his strategic and intellectual strength.
This specimen, weighing 7.82 grams of nearly pure gold, is certified Ch VF (Choice Very Fine) by NGC Ancients, with a perfect strike grade of 5/5 and a surface grade of 2/5 for light smoothing and historical handling. Despite minor edge smoothing, the details remain crisp, and the coin exhibits warm luster with exceptional strike definition—testament to its careful minting. Few Roman aurei survive with such sharp portrait detail and full legends intact.
Domitian’s aurei are prized by collectors for their artistry, rarity, and direct link to one of Rome’s most complex rulers—a man both feared and admired, whose reign marked the transition from the vigor of the Flavians to the intrigue of the later empire. This piece embodies the enduring power and refinement of Roman Imperial gold.
