AD 238-244 Roman Empire Gordian III Silver Double-Denarius NGC About Uncirculated

Gordian III ascended to the Roman throne in AD 238 at just thirteen years of age, becoming the youngest sole emperor in Roman history. His reign, lasting until AD 244, unfolded during a period of considerable military and political turbulence known as the Crisis of the Third Century. This silver double-denarius (antoninianus) was struck at the Rome mint during his rule and is certified by NGC Ancients in About Uncirculated condition.

The obverse of this type presents a radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Gordian III facing right, with the legend IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG around the periphery. The radiate crown distinguishes this as a double-denarius denomination rather than a standard denarius. Reverse designs across this series vary but typically feature imperial virtues or deities, rendered in the characteristic style of the mid-third-century Rome mint.
