Ancient Byzantine Gold Certified by NGC
(Dates Ranging from 527 - 668 A.D.)
By the mid-5th Century, much of the Western Roman Empire was dissolved through centuries of invasion and political disruption. In the east, however, Roman cultural traditions continued to flourish in what became the Byzantine Empire which
remained a powerful economic and military force until being conquered by the Turks in 1453.
The Byzantine Gold Solidus
The principal Byzantine gold coin was the "solidus", which typically weighed 4.4 grams of gold or more. For nearly a thousand years, each emperor struck their own version of the gold solidus with modified designs and inscriptions.
Each obverse design displayed the reigning monarch wearing military or court regalia while the reverse had a wider variety of designs like angels, the goddess Victory, or crucifixes. Remember, n
o two coins are exactly alike since each one was struck by hand 1,400 years ago. Given their history, high grade, and relatively high gold content, we think these Byzantine gold solidus coins are a great value in the current market.
