The newly-designed gold Indian coins first debuted in 1907, with a very low mintage of only 239,406 coins. Like all $10 coins, they contained .48375 ounces of pure gold with excellent colorations ranging from rich yellow gold to medium greenish orange gold. Coins struck in 1907 are well-known to be one of the highest quality, most beautiful examples for the entire series, which ran from 1907-1933.

Story Behind the 1907 $10 Indian
Theodore Roosevelt served as the 26th President of the United States from 1901-1909, and most historians agree that he was a noble statesman with remarkable vision. One of his many undertakings was to overhaul and redesign American gold coinage, which, in his words, had become "lifeless and stale, unbecoming of a great nation." More than anything, he wanted our money to mirror the awe-inspiring coinage of Ancient Greece, and to capture the spirit of a nation growing in stature around the world.
Roosevelt commissioned a New-York raised sculptor named Augustus St. Gaudens to redesign the Double Eagle ($20) and the Eagle ($10) gold coins. St. Gaudens passed away in 1907, but not before he completed the design and production of the $20 St. Gaudens gold piece and the gorgeous $10 Indian Head gold coin, both of which were minted from 1907-1933.
By all accounts, St. Gaudens remarkably succeeded in executing Roosevelt's wishes. On the new $10 coin design the obverse depicts Lady Liberty facing left wearing a full-feathered Indian headdress, surrounded by thirteen stars, with the date underneath. The reverse depicted a majestic eagle facing left, perched on a bundle of arrows with an olive branch. The mintmark, if any, is located to the left and slightly below the arrows underneath the eagle. These coins are considered by many to be the most artistic and beautiful designs ever incorporated on U.S. coinage, at the same time embracing the heritage of the Native Americans.
