The fabled 1715 Fleet convoy of 12 ships was loaded with New World treasure and set sail for Spain from Havana, Cuba, on July 24, 1715. In the early morning hours of July 31 a fierce hurricane sank all the ships, except for one. More than 1,000 people were killed in the storm and resulting shipwrecks.
It is called the Plate Fleet because "plata" is the Spanish word for silver, and there was a large quantity of silver coins originally found. However they were corroded due to their exposure to saltwater. The gold coins, however, did not meet this same fate, and we have some of the finest to offer today.
The coins recovered range in denomination from 1 escudo to 8 escudos. They were struck in Colombia, Mexico and Peru and are dated in the era between 1692 and 1715, during the reigns of Spanish Kings Charles II and Philip V.
Regarding the find, NGC Chairman Mark Salzberg said, "a quantity of Uncirculated Spanish gold coins such as this simply does not exist outside of a shipwreck discovery."
We have two grades to offer today, Mint State 62s and Mint State 63s. In addition to the NGC encapsulation, each coin will be accompanied by a signed certificate of authenticity
along with the original, numbered archeological tag that was used by the expedition crew to denote each item as it was discovered and recovered. The unique tag number is also indicated on the certificate of authenticity for each coin.
We have a very limited quantity available-just six Mint State 63s for $3,695 each and four Mint State 62s for $3,490 each. The quality of the coins we purchased are second to none and that's the reason we have such a small amount to offer. We had high expectations for this offering and were very picky with the coins we acquired.
