Over 2,400 years ago on the western coastline of the Black Sea was a thriving trading hub called Apollonia Pontika.
Apollonia struck its own silver coinage to promote the city and also facilitate commerce in the surrounding areas.
The early coinage of Apollonia reflected their commercial wealth and maritime power. Struck in pure silver, each intricate ancient coin has remarkable detail and pays homage to the once thriving coastal city.
Classic Designs
The obverse depicts the head of a gorgon, a mythical creature that had snakes for hair. Back then the gorgon was thought to ward off evil and many Greek cities employed this design on their coinage. The reverse shows a large anchor with a tiny crawfish and an "A" for Apollonia. The anchor depicted on these coins is actually one of the first anchors of modern design rendered in Greek art.
