A Look Back at the Year 1893

One hundred twenty five years ago, in March of 1893, a new era in technology was born when Alexander Graham Bell successfully completed the first long-distance telephone call between New York and Boston. According to the Boston Journal, "the words were heard as perfectly as though the speakers were standing close by."

That very same year the American Buffalo nearly became extinct with less than 1,000 survivors left from over 20 million at the start of the century. Another little known fact about 1893 was a stock market crash so severe that it triggered the worst depression in American history (until that time), causing a rush into gold by panicked investors.

The 1901 $20 Liberty is an overlooked and underappreciated issue in the Double Eagle series.

This "sleeper" date had a surprisingly low mintage of only 111,430 coins, yet can be acquired for only 10% more than a common issue like the 1904.

With just under an ounce (.9675) of pure gold and legitimate rarity, this is a superb choice and a great value at current levels.
