Roman Gold Shrouded in Mystery

Two thousand years after their issue, gold staters of King Coson are one of the great mysteries of the ancient coin market.

There are two theories of why this coin was issued and scholars have yet to discover the definitive reason for their creation.

The first version purports that Brutus, a main conspirator against Julius Caesar, struck the coins using gold treasure provided by the Roman Senate. He then used the gold to pay troops provided by the Thracian King Coson to defend the Republic from forces loyal to Caesar.

The second (and less likely) version surmises that the Coson Staters are nothing more than a gold version of a Roman silver coin of the time, also struck under Brutus. Whichever version is true, the coins are absolutely superb in all regards and we only have a dozen coins available for sale, so they will not be available for very long:

The obverse features three Roman consuls in procession with the inscription “KOSON” underneath. The reverse features a majestic eagle grasping a wreath atop an arrow -- very much like the back of the Indian Head Gold coins issued by the United States in the early 1900’s.
