This rare Silver Decadrachm of Arsinoe II, struck at Alexandria between 265-241 BC, is a remarkable testament to the grandeur of the Ptolemaic dynasty. Weighing an impressive 33.93 grams, this oversized silver coin was issued in honor of Queen Arsinoe II, a powerful and deified figure in Hellenistic Egypt. Certified by NGC Ancients as Extremely Fine (Strike 5/5, Surface 2/5), it remains a well-preserved relic from an era of wealth and political intrigue.

Obverse: The obverse features a finely detailed portrait of Arsinoe II, her likeness radiating both regality and divine status. She is depicted veiled and draped, crowned with a Stephane (diadem), signifying her posthumous deification. This portrayal emphasizes her enduring influence over Egypt, both during her lifetime and beyond.

Reverse: The reverse displays a diademed cornucopia, a powerful symbol of abundance and prosperity, reflecting Egypt’s immense wealth under Ptolemaic rule. The surrounding Greek inscription ΑΡΣΙΝΟΗΣ ΦΙΛΑΔΕΛΦΟΥ translates to “Arsinoe, sister-loving,” a reference to her marriage to her brother, Ptolemy II Philadelphus, a common practice among the Ptolemies to solidify their rule.

Decadrachms of this type were not struck for everyday commerce but were instead prestigious issues, likely used for ceremonial or high-value transactions. Despite some surface imperfections, this coin remains a rare and extraordinary piece of numismatic history, offering collectors a tangible connection to the opulence of ancient Egypt.  This impressive design is more commonly encountered in gold (called Octodrachms), these silver versions are dozens of times more rare and far less frequently encountered than their gold counterparts.

In fact, NGC Ancients has certified under 50 examples in all, with nothing grading higher than Choice About Uncirculated condition!
