Ptolemaic Ptolemy I Hemidrachm Choice Extremely Fine
Struck under Ptolemy I Soter, this early Ptolemaic gold hemidrachm—also known as a third chryson—combines historical significance with classic Hellenistic artistry.
Obverse: Bust of Ptolemy I right, wearing a diadem, with an aegis draped around the neck.
Reverse: Eagle with open wings standing left on a thunderbolt; monogram ΜΥ in the left field; legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ (of King Ptolemy).
Certified About Choice Extremely Fine with Strike 4/5 and Surface 1/5, this piece shows strong detail for the type despite surface challenges typical of early Ptolemaic gold. It is a desirable example linking the legacy of Alexander’s successor to the rise of Hellenistic Egypt. Ex-Jewelry notated on NGC holder, implying the coin was at some point set in a bezel. This incredibly rare coin would cost much more were it not for this notation.
