Roman | Aureus | Augustus | CH-VF-4-3

This impressive silver denarius of Augustus, struck at Lugdunum, highlights the emperor’s dynastic ambitions through the portraits of his adopted heirs.

Obverse: Laureate head of Augustus right, legend surrounding.
Reverse: Gaius and Lucius Caesar standing as designated heirs, each holding a spear and shield; above them appear a simpulum and lituus, signifying their priestly roles.

This classic dynastic issue struck at Lugdunum presents Augustus’ heirs, Gaius and Lucius Caesar, the sons of Marcus Agrippa and Julia. The reverse imagery carefully projects them as Rome’s future leaders, combining both military readiness and religious authority. Sadly, both heirs died young, leaving Augustus without a direct successor and paving the way for Tiberius.

The coin remains one of the most historically charged issues of the Augustan era, embodying the emperor’s efforts to secure his dynasty. Certified by NGC in Choice Very Fine with strong detail (Strike 4/5, Surface 3/5), this specimen balances attractive artistry with tangible links to Rome’s imperial succession.
